The West Wing (English Version)

I would like to tell you about the US TV series The West Wing. In my opinion the best TV series ever made. And I am going to try to explain why.

First of all I would like to explain what The West Wing is about. The original plan was a series about the work of the staff of the President of the United States of America in the West wing of the White House. But the President (played by Martin Sheen) got a more prominent role in the story lines.

Writer of the series is Aaron Sorkin and he really did an excellent job. Already in the pilot he succeeded to put down a storyline that let  you identify with the characters and make you want to see the next episode.

An absolute brilliant scenario and a top cast that liked to work together and you can see that in the end result. You never had the idea you were watching actors. The brilliant scenario was also reached throught the outstanding research and the consult of former White House staffers, like the Press secretaries of Reagan en Clinton. Because of that the series was always credible, also because current affairs were used in the series.

The series give you an unique look into the work of the staff of the President. An intelligent script, outstanding acting performance and a special way of filing (walk and talk) make the series that good.

It’s not for nothing that the series won 3 Golden Globes and 26 Emmy Awards among other prizes, the award for “Outstanding Drama Series” and that 4 years in a row.

Critics and political professors have praised the series and there is even an essay out there about the pedagogical qualities of The West Wing.

Formers residents of the White House, like Presidents Ford, Carter and Clinton, but also Henri Kissinger and many former staffers have stated that the series give a realistic view on what goes on in the White House.

On top of that the series are educational. Without noticing you learn something about the political structure of the USA. What also is remarkable is that dialogues are on a high level. The writers clearly made it a challenge to follow and understand the series.

A typical episode begins early in the morning and takes us through the day and what the staffers find on their path. That can be anything and is usually brought to a good or less good end within the scope of the episode. Also, there are things that develop throughout more than 1 episode or even throughout more seasons, like the disease (MS) of the President, the re-election or the kidnapping of his youngest daughter.

Once a year I watch the complete series (7 seasons) and every time I do that I am enjoying it immensely. That could be because I have been always interested in US politics, but I also recognize from another point of view (writer’s) that The West Wing is a top series.

Ik wil het met jullie jullie hebben over de Amerikaanse tv-serie The West Wing. In mijn ogen de beste tv-serie die ooit gemaakt is. En ik ga jullie uitleggen waarom ik vind dat het de beste tv-serie ooit gemaakt is.

Allereerst even uitleggen waar The West Wing over gaat. In het oorspronkelijke idee zou het alleen gaan over de staf van de president van de Verenigde Staten, maar al heel snel kreeg de president, gespeeld door Martin Sheene, een belangrijkere rol in de verhaallijnen.

Schrijver van de serie was Aaron Sorkin en die heeft echt subliem werk afgeleverd. Al in de pilot is hij erin geslaagd een zodanig verhaal neer te leggen waardoor je je identificeert met de karakters en gewoon de volgende aflevering wilt zien.

Een werkelijk geweldig scenario, een top cast, die bovendien graag met elkaar samenwerkte en dat werkte door in het uiteindelijke resultaat. Je had nooit het idee dat je naar acteurs zat te kijken.Dat geweldige scenario kwam ook door de uitmuntende research en het gebruik maken van het advies van mensen die echt in het Witte Huis gewerkt hebben zoals de perschefs van Clinton en Reagan.
 Daardoor was het verhaal in de serie ook altijd geloofwaardig mede omdat er ook gebruik werd gemaakt van actualiteiten.

De serie geeft een unieke inkijk in het werk van de staf van de president.  Een intelligent script en uitmuntend acteerwerk en een speciale manier van filmen ("walk and talk") maken de serie zo goed. Niet voor niets won de serie, onder andere 3 Golden Globes en 26 Emmy Awards onder meer voor de award voor "Outstanding Drama Series" en dat 4 jaar achter elkaar.

Recensenten en politicologie professors hebben de serie geroemd, en er is zelfs een stuk geschreven over de pedagogische kwaliteiten van The West Wing.


Voormalige bewoners van het echte Witte Huis, zoals presidenten Ford, Carter en Clinton, maar ook Henry Kissinger en vele voormalige White House staffers hebben verklaard dat de serie een realistisch beeld geeft van het reilen en zeilen binnen het Witte Huis.

Daarbij is de serie nog leerzaam ook, want ongemerkt leer je iets over de Staatsinrichting van de Verenigde Staten. Wat ook opvalt is dat niet zoals bij Nederlandse series de schrijver(s) zijn uitgegaan van de domste kijker maar de dialogen en onderwerpen juist op een tamelijk hoog niveau hebben geplaatst.

Een gemiddelde aflevering begint 's morgens vroeg en neemt ons me door de dag en alles wat de staf van de president zoal meemaakt. Dat kan van alles zijn wat meestal binnen de scope van een aflevering tot een goed of minder goed einde wordt gebracht. Ook zijn er zaken die in meerdere afleveringen of zelfs seizoenen terugkomen zoals de ziekte (MS) van de president, de herverkiezing of, bijvoorbeeld, de ontvoering van zijn jongste dochter.

1x per jaar kijk ik de gehele serie (7 seizoenen) nog een keer en elke keer geniet ik weer. Dat komt misschien omdat ik altijd geïnteresseerd ben geweest in de Amerikaanse politiek, maar ik herken ook wel vanuit andere oogpunten (bijv. het schrijvers oogpunt) dat The West Wing een top serie is.

2011 Jaaroverpeizing

Ja, 2011, aan de ene kant niet zo bijzonder voor mij persoonlijk, aan de andere kant ook wel. Ik verloor mijn baan en dan merk je dus ineens dat het als 48-jarige niet meevalt om weer een baan te vinden. Althans, je bent niet zo interessant voor werkgevers meer, blijkbaar, en ik heb sterk het gevoel dat ze na mijn sollicitatie niet verder kijken dan de geboortedatum op mijn cv, dat daarna best interessant is.
Maar genoeg daarover.

Ik had echt gedacht dat 2011 een beter jaar zou worden dan 2010 (veel slechter kon niet, dacht ik) maar het eerste half jaar was dat zeker niet.

Afgezien van een ontzettend leuk en gezellig chat contact dat eind 2010 was begonnen. Maar ook dat chat contact raakte ik kwijt, om redenen die buiten het bestek van dit blog vallen.

Wel positief was dat ik in gestaag tempo afviel. Door het vele lopen, omdat de auto niet meer wilde, startblokkering besloot een eigen leven te gaan leiden,

Ook ontdekte ik dat echte vrienden je ook helpen als je het moelijk hebt.Maar met die moeilijke tijden zal ik jullie niet lastig vallen.

En toen was er Twitter...... Ik had al een account sinds februari, maar nauwelijks iets mee gedaan, tot ongeveer half juli. Ik merkte dat ik ook mijn Marktplaats advertenties over twitter kon schieten en langzaamaan kreeg ik steeds meer volgers. En ik ging ook steeds meer mensen volgen en daar bleken hele leuke bij te zitten.
En ik maakte er een beetje een gewoonte van om mensen eerst irl te ontmoeten en dan pas op twitter te volgen. Wel apart.

En 2011 bracht ook mijn eerste Tweetup. Op 5 november in Den Bosch. Eén van de laatste warmere dagen van het afgelopen najaar. We zaten die 5e november dan ook gewoon 's avonds buiten zonder jas in Den Bosch.
Maar wat mij het meeste bijbleef is dat ik die avond gelachen heb op een manier die ik lang niet gedaan had. Zulke ontzettend leuke mensen: @southern_smileX, @carmen1157, @sammaniac, @Saintjoris @magikdat, @meneerpatrick, @omajap en anderen, maar met genoemde heb ik nog steeds bijna dagelijks contact op twitter.

2 heel gezellige ontmoetingen met Jacqueline (jubeline0108) die ik inmiddels als hele goede vriendin beschouw en ook de bezoekjes aan @dejongmiranda en @LordQenX waren altijd hartelijk en gezellig!

En toen kwam het #twitterkersfeest! In 1 woord geweldig!Meer over dat Twitterkerstfeest is te vinden in het vorige blog, dat is een Engelse versie, een uitgebreidere Nederlandse versie volgt z.s.m.

2011 was overigens ook het jaar dat ik begon met bloggen. En ook begonnen ben met een ander schrijfproject, daarover hopenlijk meer in 2012.


En zonet mijn allereerste Oud & Nieuw op Twitter meegemaakt en dat was eigenlijk best leuk

Januari ziet er gelijk al leuk uit, met tweetupXL in Utrecht, Nieuwjaarstweetup in Vlissingen en een mini-tweetup met kaasfondue met @jubeline0108 en @conavandehorn in Amsterdam.

Mijn wensen voor 2012: een baan, en het liefst snel en een speciaal iemand in mijn leven zou ook wel fijn zijn.........

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar allemaal!

Twitter Christmas Party

I told you I had an amazing story to tell and here it is:

At the end of October there was a twitter action where people could send in wishes. A tweep (@merleboudine ) had a wish to organise a Christmasparty/dinner for poor familes. Her wish was chosen and that meant a lot of organising, finding sponsors, volunteers and above all: a location.
The challenge was to get it done within 10 weeks.

It took a month before a location was provided, Seats2Meet in Maarssen offered their location for the Twitter Christmas Party. Then it was a month of asking, retweeting and more. Even in the few days before the Party (23rd of December) things like drinks, food etc were organised. I will not name all the sponsors in this English blog, they will appear in the Dutch version.

As a volunteer I was supposed to be on the location at 11:00 hrs so I took the 09:46 hrs train from my hometown and arrived in time at the location. There we started preparations like setting up Christmas trees, wrapping gifts for the kids, making crates with vegetables and fruit ready for the families en X-mas packages and another crew was busy in the kitchen with preparation for the the Christmas dinner.

It was amazing to see how a group of people put everything they had in them to give those families an unforgettable experience.

And then it was time for the families to arrive. They had to walk over a red carpet between 2 Christmas trees and were greeted with champagne in the lobby of the location.

After that they came into a large room where the children could sit at a largetable where they could draw or they could watch a movie. For the grown ups there was coffee, wine, beer and soft drinks. There were also little things to eat, appetizers.
Already then you saw happy smiling faces, but also amazement. The families clearly hadn't expected this. But there was more to come: Christmas dinner!


Dinner was served in buffer format and was really something. With live music and even a storyteller with a Christmas story. The first tears of joy were visible and more came when the dessert was served. In style, the light went out and dessert came in with flickering stars. That was turned into a buffet also.

After dinner some speeches, applause for @merleboudine, and justified, she had done something remarkable, amzing and beautiful!!!

For the families it wasn't over when they left. Before they left the building to return home they got a Christmas package, a sorts of goodie bag and a crate full of vegetables and fruit. And also a Christmas bread, don't know if you are familiar with that in the US, but it is a sweet breas with nuts, raisins and almond paste. Plus a pork roast and pudding.

Still, a week later on twitter people who were there are talking about the twitterchristmasparty and I have to say, sedomly I have experienced so much warmth and happiness!

Gnaw at the democracy

Gnaw at the democracy
I'm angry. And people whoI know me know that I rarely get angry. But it was some week. With no fewer than four attempts of  VVD (right wing liberals) and PVV(extreme right) to gnaw at the democracy and the constitution.

It all started with Dion Graus (PVV) who, as a result of the media coverage ​​of its activities in, but mostly his resignation from, the Commission de Wit (Parlementary Inquiry about the banking crisis)suggested that there actually should be  a Press Police. A few hours later, Hero Brinkman (also PVV) is hastened to explain that it had been a joke and that it had been fun to see how the leftist media responded.

Dear Mr. Brinkman and Mr. Graus, in a parliamentary democracy, do not joke about the Constitutional established freedom of the press. Ask the people of Libya, Egypt and Syria ....

We had hardly recovered from that or the VVD went into action: Occupy protesters should lose their unemployment benefits or social security. Oh, there is already a pattern emerging: there is press freedom, as long as you do not write negative things about us and freedom of demonstration and assembly as long as it is not adressed against bankers at (VVD voters in general). Dear VVD, nowhere in the Constitution it states that you can only demonstrate if you have a job. Perhaps an idea for the VVD: before you say something, read the Constitution first.

But that was not all. This time in close association VVD and PVV called that Greenpeace could no longer have their headquarters in Amsterdam. That would be bad for the image of the Netherlands. And subsidies and contributions from the Postcode Lottery could not go to Greenpeace anymore.

 As a supporter of Greenpeace, I am pretty well aware of the actions of Greenpeace and I can not remember ever Greenpeace risking the lives of other people or that Greenpeace had damaged other man’s property. Greenpeace is a non-violent organisation. But here again a lot of self-interest. Greenpeace is against nuclear waste transports, rightly, the stuff is dangerous, and PVV and VVD for nuclear power. The real reason for the observation of VVD and PVV will probably lie in the fact that Greenpeace is very critical of government policy, primarily environmental.

And bad for the image? Dear VVD, say that to your political leader, the Prime Minister. The Deputy Prime Minister of Great Britain, Nick Clegg thought that PM Rutte was the butler on arrival in The Hague.

The fourth incident has to do with public broadcasting. It will now be, after the pattern becoming visible, no surprise that PVV and VVD want to cut the funding of VARA (left) and give more money to PowNed (right).

Our Constitution makes no distinction between political movements. Press Freedom is for everyone, not just for the Telegraaf (national newspaper with a very visible preference for the VVD), demonstration and assembly freedom applies to everyone, including people on benefits, as well as the demonstration (partly) directed against the electorates of these parties.

And if you disagree with a non-gouvermentale organization, just say so, but with arguments and not the nonsense that they are bad for the image of the Netherlands. Because then I know there are a few. I find Mr. Wilders very bad for the image of the Netherlands!

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I see things that are everyday practice in dictatorships. Press on a leash, demonstrating only if you agree with us, and pressure groups, we do not see or throw in jail. And radio and TV we control.

I really hope I never have to experience this. Because I would be very angry then.
